Sleep-deprived
new parents could be spared the “sniff test” after Google filed a patent for a
smart nappy that can alert Mum and Dad if their baby needs changing.
The filing
states: “Monitoring babies’ diapers for solid or liquid waste is a perpetual
task for caregivers. It is preferred to limit the time a baby is wearing a
soiled diaper to reduce discomfort and reduce the likelihood of the baby
developing skin rash and irritation.”
To address
this chore, Verily Life Sciences, a research division of Google’s parent
company, Alphabet, envisages nappies that have conductive and sensing elements
embedded in the absorbent areas. Changes in conductivity would flag an “event”,
while an algorithm would identify whether urine or solids were involved.
